Garden Series The Garden Series is an ongoing appreciation of the beauty and complexity of my local community gardens. Having started my career as a portrait artist I approach the Garden subjects in a similar way. The expressive qualities in plants and flowers relate to me deeply, both physically and emotionally. Ultimately the paintings are a conversation with myself. They describe my viewpoint, my relationships, and my understanding of the natural world. The Bathers Series began with images from Walden and Valley Pond located near me, and expanded to tableaus found on Cape Cod and St.John. My goal is to create figurative compositions that are current, classic and timeless. The collages are diptychs created from collections of photographs and images which I have acquired over the years. The images are joined because of qualities, both obvious and subtle, that enable the subjects to speak to each other across the divide of time and space. These portraits are selected from over fifty commissioned portraits done from the late eighties to the present. I have always been primarily interested in figurative art. I was inspired to attempt portraiture after seeing the retrospective of Thomas Eakins work at the Boston Museum of Fine Arts in 1982. I feel his straight-forward, no frills approach is very American and deeply authentic. Children and young adults, for me, present these kinds of qualities naturally. The photos shown here are selected, and cropped from research examples for my paintings. These pictures reiterate my response to the garden and need no further interpretation in paint. |
